This week we put the spotlight on our fantastic Speech-Language Pathologist, Mrs. Nikki Johnson. Nikki has been a staple of the Centerville School District for many years and has truly made an impact with her time here for many students and families. She is fantastic at what she does and a vital resource for our school! Thank you for all of your dedication to the students, families, and staff of Centerville School! Staff Spotlight - Nikki Johnson - Speech-Language Pathologist About Me - I grew up in Sioux Falls and have been married to my husband, Todd, for 25 years. We live south of Centerville on my husband's family farm. Todd is a self-employed farmer. We have three sons, Blake, Lane, and Colter and will soon be adding a daughter to our family! Our son, Lane, is getting married to Brynn Nelson on June 1st, 2025! Blake is 23 years old and is in the physical therapy graduate program at the University of South Dakota. Lane is 20 years old and a sophomore at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He, and his fiancée Brynn, are both elementary education majors. Colter is 17 years old and a junior at Centerville. I received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Dakota. After graduating, I worked at Lewis and Clark Elementary in South Sioux City, NE (2 years) and the Centerville Good Samaritan Nursing Home (3 years). Shortly after my son, Lane, was born I made the decision to stay at home with my young sons. I returned to working outside of the home when the Centerville School hired me to be the district's speech-language pathologist (SLP) in 2006; I have been with the district ever since! Favorites - Color: Yellow Animal: Monkey Hobby: Spending time with family camping or boating Food: Italian Drink: Cherry Coke Zero and coffee Memory - A favorite memory of my time at CHS was being given the opportunity to be at the same school as my boys. My first year at CHS was my oldest son, Blake's, first year of preschool in Centerville. Working at their school has allowed me privileges many working moms do not have. It made it easy to attend classroom events when they were young, have similar vacation days as them and easily attend their activities. Why Statement - I got into education on accident. When I began college, I started as a pre-physical therapy major with the intention of working in healthcare. I quickly found out physical therapy was not the path for me as did not like chemistry! A college advisor suggested I consider enrolling in an introduction to communication disorders course. I quickly fell in love with the profession and the flexibility it offered. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can work in various settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, nursing homes, private practice clinics, schools, and universities. We can also work with a variety of people from babies and toddlers to school-aged students and adults of all ages. However, after landing my first job in education, I was hooked and have never looked back!

The National Honor Society students would like to recognize Mrs. Jorgensen, Mr. Haiar, and John for their commitment to Centerville and the education of our students! This week we put the spotlight on another fantastic teacher in our building. Mrs. Stephanie Ruter has filled the roles of 1st grade teacher, special education teacher, and volleyball coach in her time here at CHS. Thank you for all of your dedication to Centerville School Mrs. Ruter, we are happy to have you and your family as a part of Tornado Nation! Staff Spotlight - Mrs. Ruter - SPED Teacher and Head Volleyball Coach About me: I grew up on a farm near Balaton, Minnesota, and attended Russell-Tyler-Ruthton School. I went to the University of Sioux Falls for Elementary Education. My first teaching job was at Hawthorne Elementary in Sioux Falls, where I taught 4th grade, 1st grade, and Reading Recovery. After that, I taught 3rd-7th grade Language Arts for one year in Gayville. I also spent eight years in the Irene-Wakonda School District teaching preschool and kindergarten. I then moved to Centerville to teach 1st grade. Now, I’m in my second year of teaching Special Education for K-3rd grade and coaching volleyball. This is already my fifth year here in Centerville. I’ve been married to my husband, David, for 21 years. We have five children: Dylan (29), Taylor (27), Ella (16), Lane (14), and Logan (14). We also have two grandchildren, Aubree (10) and Jaxsyn (6). Favorites: Color: Purple Animal: Puppies Hobby: Attending my kids’ events, playing cards, shopping, family vacations Food: Mexican Drink: Bubblrs Memory: In our short time here our family has had many life memories of watching our kids play sports, sing in pops concert, marching, and doing what they love to do. Attending state XC meets, coaching the girls in volleyball, and going to state in girls’ basketball have been quite fun. But a favorite for the last five years is walking down to the gym for games and seeing my mother-in-law here in “her spot” ready to cheer everyone on. Why Statement - Why did you choose and continue to choose to be in the world of education? I chose social work because I wanted to help kids. That was tough on my heart and I changed my major to elementary education half way through my freshman year after helping in Mrs. Arda Oliver’s classroom. I love working with the littles and I have a passion for teaching kids how to read.

The elementary students that won the January Character Counts Award for each class were treated to ice cream from Pump N Stuff with Mr. Fischer. Congratulations to these students!

They will also get a free popcorn coupon. The JV games will both start at 5:00 and girls’ varsity will begin at 6:15 and boys’ varsity will follow around 7:30. Please sign your name and service information on the ticket table clipboard when you arrive. All military personnel will be introduced before the start of the boys’ varsity game. The Centerville Elementary students had an awards assembly this morning to celebrate all of their amazing accomplishments from the first half of the school year. Students received awards for writing, math, reading, perfect attendance and character. We have had three students that have read at least a million words since the beginning of last school year and have become the initial members of the Million Word Club! Congratulations to Adalyn, Preslee, and Anni! Awesome Work Students!
