This week we put the spotlight on a very diverse teacher in our building who we are thankful for. Teaching anything from middle school math and history to elementary PE, we are very appreciative of Ms. Gust's dedication to the Centerville Tornado Nation!
Staff Spotlight - Sheila Gust - MS History and Physical Education Teacher
About Me: I graduated from Centerville High School and attended the University of South Dakota, I received my bachelor's and master's degrees and have taught for 22 year and 17 of them have been in Centerville. I have 3 children, Chase, Carter and Althea.
Favorites:
Color - green or black
Animal - definitely a calico cat named Andersen
Hobby - chasing my kids to their various events, but I'll have to find something new after this year!
Food - pizza or anything I didn't have to cook!
Drink - if you know me, you know, I'm a diet coke girl!
Memory: I have been blessed with some very special memories at CHS including when I got to be a part of the girls basketball team that went to the state tournament in 2011, watching the girls win the state tournament last spring in Rapid will always be a favorite memory for me, and and I have a million little pe moments in the gym with the kids I have taught over the years that are what make my job so special!
Why Statement - Why did you choose and continue to choose to be in the world of education?
I chose to join the world of education because it was a place that I could challenge myself to be creative and a life long learner. I also knew that it would allow me to spend time with my own children, my nieces and my nephews as they grew up. I love the kids I have taught over the years and I know every day is full of different and unique challenges and joys. I feel very blessed to be able to teach the children of Centerville, they are by far the best part of my job!

We took some time this morning to honor our Veterans with a program to show them our gratitude for their service. The program started with the pledge of allegiance, followed by the national anthem sang by the high school choir and directed by Mr. Josh Morphew. Mrs. Fischer and a group of her 4th grade students then showed us the proper technique for folding the flag and shared a poem with us. After honoring all of our veterans in attendance a special performance of the song "No Greater Love" was done by an all-grade choir under the direction of Mr. Morphew. This led us to a fantastic speech by our very own Mr. Doug Edberg about his time served in the Navy. The program concluded with another song by our high school choir titled "We Honor You" and a thank you to all who attended by Mr. Fischer. THANK YOU to all who attended to help us give thanks to our veterans today! We were especially grateful for all of the veterans who could join us and let us honor them.

This week we turn the spotlight to yet another fantastic teacher in our building with multiple years of service to our school and community. We are very fortunate to have high quality educators in our building and Mrs. Childress is a great example of one.
Staff Spotlight - Jodi Childress - 1st Grade Teacher
Favorites:
Color - Teal
Hobby - Watching my kids activities and reading a good book
Food - Mexican
Drink - Lavender lemonade
About Me:
I first moved to Centerville in fifth grade, graduating from Centerville School in 2000. This community has always held a special place in my heart, and in 2011, my husband Brady and I returned to raise our family here. We've been blessed with 20 years of marriage and four wonderful children. Brady works at Avera and enjoys being involved in activities in the community. Our oldest, Micah, graduated high school this past spring and is now pursuing a degree in Christian studies with an emphasis in youth ministry through Grand Canyon University’s online program. Our only daughter, Haley, is currently a junior with a passion for volleyball and basketball. Zach, a freshman, is active in football, basketball, track, and baseball. Finally, our youngest, Gavin, a sixth grader, shares his brother’s enthusiasm for sports, eagerly participating in them all.
This is my ninth year teaching in Centerville, and with each passing year—whether in Kindergarten, 5th grade, or now 1st grade—my passion for teaching has only deepened. Each grade and every student has brought something unique to my journey, and I treasure the connections and memories we've built together. I genuinely believe I learn as much from my students as they do from me. There’s something truly special about waking up every day to do what I love, surrounded by incredible colleagues and remarkable students who make this work so meaningful.
Favorite Memory at CHS:
I have so many incredible memories, but if you were at the Girl's State basketball tournament last year, you'll understand why that day stands out as my favorite. It wasn’t just about the girls winning—though that in itself was unforgettable—it was everything that happened afterward. Watching our team celebrate with such genuine joy and grace, inviting the girls from the other teams to join in, showed a true spirit of sportsmanship and unity. That moment embodied the heart of our community and school, and it’s one I’ll carry with me forever, reminding me how proud I am to be part of something so special.
Why did you choose education?
From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with kids, and my dad always encouraged me to consider teaching. I was a daycare provider for 10 years because I wanted to stay at home with my own kids, but when my dad was re-diagnosed with cancer in 2014, it became clear to me that I wanted him to see me actively pursuing that dream. That year, I began my education journey online with Grand Canyon University.
